Warren Dragons
Boys
Coach: Jeff Berdine (12th season, 155-106)
2012-13 overall record: 13-9
2012-13 region record: 7-7 (fifth)
2012-13 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Matt Sandberg, Austin Jerman, Mark Davis, Jack Daley
Top returning players: Collin Fantaskey, Tanner Stanz, Jacoby Passmore
Assistant coaches: Dave Papalia, Jeff Eaton, Joe McGraw, Ric Eaton
Outlook: Warren has turned into a perennial contender for the postseason and is one of the toughest places to win in District 10. The Dragons will need to plug some holes from graduation to stay competitive in Region 6. Warren lost Matt Sandberg, Austin Jerman, Mark Davis and Jack Daley in the spring. Sandberg was voted to the all-region first team after scoring 14.5 points per game last season, while Davis was a second-team selection with 11.4 ppg. Jerman scored 7.4 points per game and Daley was a contributor as well. The Dragons return Collin Fantaskey, Tanner Stanz and Jacoby Passmore to lead a young team. Fantaskey scored nine points per game, while Passmore and Stanz scored 6.5 and 5.5 ppg, respectively. Passmore and Fantaskey are returning starters, while Stanz started several games last winter. Warren could also receive contributions from seniors Ryan Gustafson, Austin Schwanke and Max Gross along with several juniors and sophomores as well. The Dragons also picked up 6-5 forward transfer Jake McBride from Jamestown, N.Y. Warren has a loaded non-region schedule, including an appearance in the Franklin and St. Bonas tournaments along with showdowns against Cathedral Prep and McDowell. The Dragons will be battle-tested heading into region play and look like a strong contender to get back to the postseason.

Girls
Coach: Lisa Ruhlman (6th season, 67-48)
2012-13 overall record: 15-8
2012-13 region record: 6-4 (third)
2012-13 playoff results: Lost to Hickory 58-43 in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Jaimie Eaton, Taylor Mineweaser
Top returning players: Alexa Bupp, Kari Santo, Brit Merenick
Assistant coaches: John White, Jasper Merenick, Jessica Robinson
Outlook: Warren put together another solid season last winter by making the District 10 Class AAA playoffs. The Dragons finished in third place in Region 6 and earned a signature win over powerhouse Mercyhurst Prep in region play. Warren will have some work to do this season to replace Jaimie Eaton and Taylor Mineweaser. Eaton averaged 19 points per game and was a 1,000-point scorer. She was voted to the all-region first team, while Mineweaser scored 6.6 ppg to make the second team. The Dragons return seniors Alexa Bupp, Kari Santo and Brit Merenick along with sophomore D.J. Hahn. Hahn had a breakout freshman season with 9.1 points per game to be voted to the second team, while Bupp scored 7.3 points per game. Warren has strong senior leadership and will need the lower levels to come up to provide depth. The Dragons will have to come up with some big wins in region play this season. With an odd situation with Conneaut, either Region 5 or 6 will likely lose its fourth playoff spot for the Eagles. Last year, it was Region 6 and Harbor Creek was left out of the playoffs. If Region 6 loses its fourth spot again, each game between Villa Maria, Mercyhurst Prep, Harbor Creek and Warren will mean something this season. If the Dragons can develop some depth to help out the seniors, they will be a tough team to beat.

Warren Dragons
Boys
Coach (season, record): Jeff Berdine (11th season, 140-100)
2011-12 overall record: 19-7
2011-12 region record (place): 11-3 (second)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Sharon 77-54 in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals and Girard 42-26 in the semifinals before losing to General McLane 56-49 in the championship. Warren then lost to Hampton 60-41 in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Preston McMeans, Hank Morrison, Kory Thomas, Drew Lobdell
Top returning players: Austin Jerman, Mark Davis, Matt Sandberg, Collin Fantaskey, Jack Daley, Grayson Foley, Andrew Hammersley
Assistant coach: Dave Papalia
Outlook: Warren was impressive last season as the Dragons made their way to the District 10 Class AAA championship game. Warren ran into powerhouse General McLane but the Dragons still competed in the PIAA playoffs. Coach Jeff Berdine will have some big-time players to replace if Warren wants to repeat that success this year. Preston McMeans, an all-region first-team selection that averaged 19 points per game, graduated along with second-team selection Hank Morrison, who scored 14 points per game. Kory Thomas and Drew Lobdell also graduated, leaving plenty of production that needs to be replaced this winter. Senior leader Austin Jerman is back along with classmates Mark Davis, Matt Sandberg, Jack Daley, Grayson Foley and Andrew Hammersley. All six will be impact players and provide senior leadership for Warren along with junior Collin Fantaskey. Jerman, Davis and Sandberg are returning starters while the rest will be in the mix for the final two spots. Tanner Stanz, Jacoby Passmore, Ryan Gustafson, Austin Schwanke and Phil Hachula are new players that could also earn meaningful playing time this winter. Warren has plenty of offensive firepower but the Dragons’ signature defense will decide how far they can go this season.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Lisa Ruhlman (5th season, 52-40)
2011-12 overall record: 15-8
2011-12 region record (place): 9-5 (fourth)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Hickory 51-43 in overtime in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Emily Sherman, Kristin Hultquist, Kristie Reynolds, Sam Bevevino
Top returning players: Jaimie Eaton, Taylor Mineweaser, Alexa Bupp, Brittany Merenick
Assistant coaches: John White, Jessica Robinson, Steve Merenick
Outlook: Warren came very close to upsetting Hickory in the first round of the playoffs last year. The Dragons will need several younger players to step up to return to the postseason. Warren graduated Emily Sherman, Kristin Hultquist, Kristie Reynolds and Sam Bevevino int he spring. Sherman might be the biggest loss after being voted to the all-region second team last year. The Dragons return several standout players, including Jaimie Eaton. She was a first-team selection last year and should go over 1,000 points. Taylor Mineweaser, Alexa Bupp and Brittany Merenick are also big-time contributors back this season. Warren has a solid core of plays back but the Dragons’ schedule will be even tougher with the addition of Villa Maria in region play. The Dragons can compete with some of the region’s best teams but they will need to continue to develop and get contributions from younger players to do so.

Matt Sandberg

The Warren boys basketball team put together one of its best seasons in recent history by making the District 10 Class AAA championship game and reaching the PIAA playoffs.

Matt Sandberg was a big part of that success throughout the postseason, scoring 15 points in a tough 56-49 loss to General McLane in the D-10 title game.

Sandberg, a 6-foot 2-inch junior, was one of the Dragons’ regular players this season and could have a big impact again next season as a senior.

Warren Dragons
Boys
Coach (season, record): Jeff Berdine (10th season, 122-92)
2010-11 overall record: 13-9
2010-11 region record (place): 6-8 (fifth)
2010-11 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Tyler Fantaskey, Kyle Papalia, Joel Stewart
Top returning players: Preston McMeans, Hank Morrison, Kory Thomas, Mark Davis, Austin Jerman
Assistant coaches: Dave Papalia, Chris Yost, Joe McGraw
Outlook: Warren could be a surprising team this winter. The Dragons have been on the cusp of making the playoffs the past few years and could break through this season. Warren lost Tyler Fantaskey, Kyle Papalia and Joel Stewart to graduation but the return of Preston McMeans, Hank Morrison, Kory Thomas, Mark Davis and Austin Jerman gives the Dragons a tough team. McMeans has started since his sophomore season and should eclipse 1,000 points this winter with 648 through his first three years. Morrison is a returning starter and Thomas started half of last year’s games. Davis and Jerman were also part-time starters last winter as Warren is loaded with experience. The focus of this year’s team will be to improve defensively and limit mental mistakes. The region is tough with perennial powers like General McLane, Girard and East. Add in Central Tech and each game is a big game during region play. Warren has been waiting in the wings the past few years and this looks like the year the Dragons not only make the playoffs but emerge as a region contender.

2010-11 overall record: 14-9
2010-11 region record (place): 7-7 (tied for fourth)
2010-11 playoff results: Lost 64-30 in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: None
Top returning players: Kristin Hultquist, Emily Sherman, Kristie Reynolds, Jaimie Eaton, Sabrina Anderson, Taylor Mineweaser, Alexa Bupp
Assistant coaches: John White, Jessica Robinson, Jasper Merenick
Outlook: Warren found a way into the District 10 playoffs last winter and is looking to return there after not losing anyone to graduation. The Dragons return an experienced group, led by Kristin Hulquist, Emily Sherman, Kristie Reynolds, Jaimie Eaton, Sabrina Anderson, Taylor Mineweaser and Alexa Bupp. Warren could also receive big contributions from Brit and McKenzie Merenick as well as Nerissa McIntyre. Region 6 is in transition with half of the region getting new coaches, leaving plenty of room for experienced teams to make their move. The Dragons could be a dangerous team this winter as they have gone through the battles of region play before.
