Still a great year for the Dragons, who reached the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AA team, singles and doubles tournaments after winning D-10 titles.

Update 5:

Cathedral Prep’s Alex Brzozowski and Mario Nicolia advance to the PIAA Class AAA tennis quarterfinals with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Delaware Valley’s Andrew Neidig and Joe Hunt. Prep’s duo will play Shady Side Academy’s Alok Nimgaonkar and Chris Grubbs  in the 5 p.m. quarterfinals. The Shady Side pair rallied to win 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3. Nimgaonkar was a top-notch singles player this season.

Update 4:

Cathedral Prep junior Nicholas Ward advanced to the Class AAA singles quarterfinals this afternoon with a 6-1, 6-0 win over District 2 champion Nathan Engh of Abington Heights.

Ward will face District 1 third-place finisher Michael Furr of Unionville at 5 p.m. Furr beat Butler’s Will Nesbitt 6-1, 6-3.

Update 3:

Cathedral Prep’s Nicholas Ward was scheduled to play in the Class AAA singles first round at noon, but his match results are not yet available. Prep’s Alex Brzozowski and Mario Nicolia were scheduled to open in AAA doubles at 1:30 p.m.

We’ll report those results when they become available.

Update 2:

Warren’s Thomas Pellegrino and Matt Sandberg win easily in the Class AA doubles first round, beating Somerset senior twins Jared Harshbarger and Justin Harshbarger 6-0, 6-1.

The Warren pair will face Winchester Thurston juniors Tym Hoban and Alex Kietz in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Warren eliminated Winchester Thurston 3-2 in the PIAA team tournament’s first round recently.

Hoban and Kietz won 6-2, 6-1 in today’s first round.

The Warren boys tennis team made its first trip to Hershey today for the PIAA Class AA team tournament.

The Dragons’ experience ended quickly.

A talented Wyomissing team handed Warren a 5-0 loss in this morning’s quarterfinals, as the Dragons closed the team season with a 19-1 record.

Wyomissing, the District 3 champion, won all 10 sets, including 6-0 , 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.  Here’s a look at the Class AA bracket.

Cathedral Prep will look for better luck today when it faces Pennsbury in the Class AAA quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. at Hershey Racquet Club. Prep is making its first trip to the quarterfinals since 2004.

Prep and Warren each will take three players to Hershey next week for the PIAA singles and doubles tournaments.

Thomas Pellegrino

Thomas Pellegrino has been a key figure in the Warren boys tennis team’s dream season. Last week, Pellegrino helped the unbeaten Dragons sweep the District 10 Class AA postseason titles.

On May 9, he teamed up with Matt Sandberg to win the D-10 Class AA doubles title. The duo rallied to beat Fairview’s top team of R.J. Petrella and Andres Flores in three tough sets, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, in the finals.

On Friday in the Class AA team tournament, Pellegrino added a 7-4, 6-4 victory over Mario Picciotto at No. 2 singles in the Dragons’ 4-1 semifinal win over Kennedy Catholic.

Pellegrino then claimed a crucial victory in Warren’s historic 3-2 victory over Fairview in the title match. He beat Flores 7-6, 6-0 to help the Dragons secure their first D-10 team title.

Warren ended Fairview’s District 10 Class AA boys tennis team title streak at 11 today with a 3-2 victory over the Tigers at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Fairview had won each of the first 11 titles since the team tournament started in 2001.

Warren, which improved to 17-0, also capped a District 10 season in which the Dragons swept the singles and doubles titles as well. Shane Burns won the AA singles title Monday, and Matt Sandberg and Thomas Pellegirino won the doubles crown Wednesday.

Fairview (12-6) will not advance a player to the PIAA tournament.

Update 2:

Cathedral Prep claimed its third straight District 10 Class AAA boys tennis title today by beating rival McDowell 4-1 at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

The Ramblers completed a three-match season sweep of the rival Trojans and a three-day sweep of the D-10 finals. On Monday, Prep’s Nicholas Ward won the Class AAA singles title. On Wednesday, Alex Brzozowski and Mario Nicolia claimed the AAA doubles title.

This is the seventh overall D-10 team title for Prep since the tournament started in 2001.

Update 1:

Fairview and Warren advanced to the District 10 Class AA boys tennis team finals today with morning semifinal victories at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Fairview beat Greenville 4-1 and Warren defeated Kennedy Catholic 4-1 in the semifinals.

The Tigers are going for their 12th consecutive D-10 Class AA team title. They are the only team to ever win the title since the tournament started in 2001.

However, Warren defeated Fairview twice during the regular season — once because Fairview used a player later ruled ineligible. Warren also claimed both District 10 titles earlier this week as Shane Burns won the AA singles title, and Matt Sandberg and Thomas Pellegirino won the doubles crown.

The team finals are scheduled for 2 p.m. at Pennbriar.

Cathedral Prep and McDowell began playing the Class AAA championship match at noon. We’ll have an update when that match is completed.

Shane Burns

Shane Burns has been training and developing throughout his career at Warren in an effort to win a District 10 singles championship. The junior made the most of his first opportunity Monday.

Burns advanced through a tough Class AA singles bracket Saturday before knocking off Greenville standout Chad Ferguson 6-3, 7-5 Monday to claim the D-10 Class AA title.

It was the Dragons’ first singles title in five years. Burns also can head to Hershey for the team championships if Warren pulls out two wins Friday.
