The Pennsylvania Cable Network will air wrestling each Saturday after this week. The “Match of the Week” segment will begin Friday with a replay of the Powerade tournament at Canon McMillan High School. The tournament took place last week and the broadcast will likely feature only championship and third-place bouts. Saegertown’s Devan Brown finished second in the 106-pound class and his championship bout will likely be on the broadcast. The remaining lineup of broadcasts is filled with eastern matches except for one. The Conneaut at Saegertown match on Jan. 15 will be shown on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. courtesy of Armstrong Cable.

Coach (season/record): Tom Tingley (3rd/24-19)
2011-12 overall record: 14-4
2011-12 region record: 5-4
Top wrestlers lost: Landon Clayton
Top wrestlers returning: Evan Clayton, Jake Heim, Dustin Schleifer, Sam Breese
Assistant coaches: Cortney Roberts, Adam Gadsby
Outlook: Breese, a junior, was a state qualifier at 285 pounds last season and finished 30-10. He leads a talented group that includes Even Clayton, a senior 106-pounder who was 21-11 last season; Heim, a 126-pound junior who went 15-10; and Schleiffer, a 138-pound senior who was 17-11. Freshman 132-pounder Trevor Williams was 10-2 at the junior high level last season and should make an impact right away. In his third season, Tingley is pushing for the Sailors to qualify for the District 10 team championships and become a factor in the Region 1 race. At least two or three PIAA qualifiers and a state place-winner are on his wish list.

Saegertown
Coach (season/record): Jim Mulligan (5th/49-9)
2011-12 overall record: 11-2
2011-12 region record: 8-1
Top wrestlers lost: Justin Mitchell, Branden Stafford, Josh Tomiczek, Jerod Young
Top wrestlers returning: Dylan Auck, Quinton Ross, Bing-Bong Elizon, Tyler Vath, Nick Monico, Lucas Smith, Garrett Zuver, Matt Humes, Lance Neuscheler, Aaron Jackson, Andrew Boylan, Jeremy Mitchell, Dylan Reynolds, Brock Henderson, John Macken, James Sowers
Assistant coaches: Adam Horne, Steve Tomiczek, Pat Bradshaw, Larry Lee, Brett Vath, Luke Harrison
Outlook: The Panthers had an outstanding 2011-12 season, with the only two losses coming to PIAA Class AA third-place finisher Fort LeBoeuf. Although they lost several quality wrestlers from that team, plenty of talent returns led by Vath, who went 42-4 last season, won district and regional titles and finished fifth in the state at 106 pounds. He is slated to move up to 120. Dylan Reynolds went 31-8 last season and finished fifth in the district at 160 for Cambridge Springs. He is expected to compete at 182 this season. Overall, the Panthers have a good mix of seniors and underclassmen, and enough quality depth to compete for a region title and factor into the D-10 Class AA team race.

Coach (season/record): Dave Onorato (4th/12-47)
2011-12 overall record: 9-12
2011-12 region record: 0-8
Top wrestlers lost: Eric Miller
Top wrestlers returning: Trevor McCray, Gage Dalton, Christian Bock, Vitaliey Kleschevinikov, Dan Daugherty
Assistant coaches: Ed Onorato, Jason Johnson
Outlook: Onorato has gradually rebuilt Girard’s program and as he begins his fourth season expects to field a competitive lineup with a few wrestlers who have the potential to make deep postseason runs. At the top of that list is McCray, who is 80-24 in his career and put together a 33-7 season in 2011-12, when he was one of three District 10 qualifiers for the YellowJackets. The other returning D-10 qualifiers are Christian Bock, who went 20-19 last season, and Dan Daugherty, who was 15-19 last year. McCray projects at 138 or 145, with Bock at 160 or 170 and Daugherty at 195 or 220. Dalton is penciled in at 132 or 138, with Kleschevinikov at 170 or 182. Freshman Brendan Kohan should slide in at 152 or 160 after an accomplished junior career.

2011-12 region record: 2-7
Top wrestlers lost: Derek Rozantz, Derek Kruse
Top wrestlers returning: Sam Lehman, Ryan Cardman, John Anderson, Shawn Nerthling
Assistant coach: Leroy Oglesby
Outlook: Corbin views the upcoming season as “very promising.” The Tigers have plenty of experienced starters returning and Corbin expects their experience to pay off. He is hoping for four or five District 10 qualifiers. Lehman (22-10 last season), Nerthling (18-18) and Cardman (17-14) were district qualifiers last year, and Lehman won a match at the district tournament.

Coach (season/record): Sean Hayes (1st/0-0)
2011-12 overall record: 0-9
2011-12 region record: 0-8
Top wrestlers returning: James Carr, Pat Williamson, Deiontre Plott
Assistant coaches: Melvin Crosby, Jeremy Corey, Sean Spinelli
Outlook: Hayes takes over East’s recently-resurrected program this season and expects to be able to field the most balanced lineup so far. The Warriors had some good preseason workouts, he said, and hope to carry that intensity into the season. Carr (8-6 last season) projects as a 132-pounder, Williams (5-3) is expected to be at 220 and Plott (9-5) anchors the lineup at 285. All three gained experience last season and competed at the District 10 Class AAA tournament. Newcomer Craig Heidelberg is penciled in at 160.

Coach (season/record): Dana Gorton (1st/0-0)
2011-12 overall record: 7-7
2011-12 region record: 1-7
Top wrestlers lost: Alex Svetz, Austin Phelps
Top wrestlers returning: Jordan Bryan, Andrew Phelps, Tyler Stapp, Corey Voorhis
Assistant coaches: Mark Hughes, Alex Svetz
Outlook: Gorton takes over a program that will miss Phelps and Svetz, a regional runner-up who was fourth at Hershey. But a solid core group returns led by Bryan, a 2011-12 District 10 runner up who went 27-11 at 160 pounds and is expected to be back at that weight this season. Voorhis, also a returning regional qualifier who was fourth in the district at 152 last season, posted a 17-12 mark and also should remain at the same weight class. Newcomers Adam Ballew (projected at 120), Andrew Benden (106) and Logan Gray (113) could contribute right away. Gorton said turnout has been strong and he believes the Grapepickers could be headed for a high-water mark season.

Coach (season/record): Tom Courtney (17th overall, 1st at Conneaut/0-0)
2011-12 overall record: New school
2011-12 region record: New school
Top wrestlers lost: New school
Top wrestlers returning: Nick Moss, Brandon Moss, Kyle Lukewich, Taylor Ellis, Brandon Sherman
Assistant coaches: Matt Horne, Cash Horne, Robert Courtney, Adam Green
Outlook: Courtney, who spent 16 seasons coaching at Conneaut Lake, takes over the new program, although Conneaut Lake has been the only one of the three former district schools (Conneaut Valley, Linesville) that has fielded a wrestling team for several years. Courtney brings with him an experienced staff and a solid nucleus of former Conneaut Lake wrestlers led by Lukewich, a returning regional qualifier who finished 34-10 last season at 120. Nick Moss (23-12 last season at 106), Brandon Moss (13-10 at 113) and Taylor Ellis (20-8 at 138) all were district qualifiers last season. Conneaut Lake went 8-6 overall last season and 8-1 in the region, and the new-look Eagles should be solid.

Fort LeBoeuf
Coach (season/record): Tim Simon (4th/52-13)
2011-12 overall record: 18-3
2011-12 region record: 8-0
Top wrestlers lost: Kody Pace, Brandon Puckly, Riley Smith, Craig Cihon
Top wrestlers returning: Tyler Kuzma, Adam Borgia, George Mcguire, Brad Malinowski, Taylor Harrington, Taylor Fox, Jack Middleton, Evan Daley, Nate Conti
Assistant coaches: Steve Waite, Scott Waite, Dan Baney, Ethan Saylor
Outlook: The Bison will reach into one of the state’s deepest feeder systems to replace four standouts from last season, when Fort LeBoeuf finished third in the PIAA Class AA team dual championships and had an outstanding state individual tournament. Cihon (47 wins, 2nd at Hershey) and Pace (49 wins, 3rd) led the way, while Puckley went 40-10 and was a state qualifier and Smith was 38-15 and a regional consolation semifinalist. While their firepower is gone, plenty of talent remains. Daley is back after a tremendous junior season in which he went 50-6 and finished fifth at Hershey. Mcguire is a returning state qualifier who went 33-18, and Harrington (37-13 last season) and Malinowski (18-15) each were fourth at regionals. There’s no reason to expect anything less than another run at the D-10 and perhaps even PIAA team Class AA titles, and LeBoeuf will have at least one strong individual championship contender in Daley.

Coach (season/record): Greg Barnett (2nd/6-5)
2011-12 overall record: 6-5
2011-12 region record: 6-4
Top wrestlers lost: Levi Catalfu, Zac Morris, Cody Bailey
Top wrestlers returning: Ryan Morris, Shane Taubert, Tim Suydan, Alex Suydan
Assistant coaches: Jarred Johnson, Brandon Edwards
Outlook: The Suydans and Taubert each won at least 15 matches last season and along with Morris will represent the backbone of a team that lost some firepower with the graduation of Catalfu and Morris, both District 10 champs last season, and Baily. Taubert went 18-12 last season and lost in the district consolation semifinals. He is expected to compete at 170 pounds. Tim Suydan, who was 18-last season, advanced to the district semifinals at 220 and is expected to be back at that weight. Morris (10-7) and Alex Suydan (16-17) each won a match at districts. Newcomers include former PJW state qualifier Jonathan Hammond (projected at 120 or 125) and Mark May. Barnett, in his second season at Corry, believes the Beavers will be competitive and show improvement as the season goes on.

Coach (season/record): Dennis Clemente (12th/not submitted)
2011-12 overall record: 4-15
2011-12 region record: 1-10
Top wrestler lost: Maxx Swoger
Top wrestlers returning: Jared Carlson, Dijon Deboe
Assistant coaches: Scott Burbee, Andy Henry
Outlook: The Colonels were senior-heavy last season and lost every starter from 152 pounds up, including Swoger, a District 10 runner-up at 285 who went 2-2 at regionals. Carlson and Deboe lead the returnees and both had quality seasons last year. Carlson went 28-9, finished third at districts at 138 and won a pair of matches at regionals. He will move up to 145 or 152 this season. Deboe posted a solid season with a 19-12 record and a pair of tournament top-four finishes. Clemente said the Colonels will lean on those two until a crop of newcomers and younger starters matures. That group is led by Joshua Caban (projected at 120), Joshua Caban (120) and junior Chris Starocci (170), a Cathedral Prep transfer.

Top wrestlers returning: Matt Wheeler, Sebastian Rinehardt, Garrett Behringer, Kyle Panko, Austin Miczo, Shayne Vorse, Ian Pettis, Isaac Howard, Dalton Daniels
Assistant coaches: Greg Evans, David Osterberg, Roger Sherman, Adam English
Outlook: The Wildcats are young but don’t lack experience with several starters back from last season. Matt Wheeler is the top returnee after posting a 31-11 record with a fifth-place District 10 finish and reaching the regional consolation semifinals. He’s projected at 120 pounds this season. Rinehardt, who is penciled in at 152, went 23-14 last season and was a district qualifier, as was Behringer, who went 13-14 and is expected to compete at 160. Sherman expects newcomers Isaac Merritt (projected at 145) and Bruce Copeland (113), a former PJW qualifier, to contribute right away. The Wildcats should be balanced with quality depth at several weight classes and will be a factor in the Region 2 race.
