Cochranton Cardinals
Coach (season, record): Tom Haynes (16th season, 45-96)
2010 overall record: 3-7
2010 region record (place): 2-6 (tied for seventh)
2010 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Jeff Hawley, Tim Popp
Top returning players: Alex Spahn, Erik Eisenhooth, Austin Andrews, Cameron Cyphert, Clayton Beatty, Chad Eisenhooth, Jared Wolff, Cole Graham, Casey Adams
Assistant coaches: Don Erdley, Brian Olson, Steve Carroll, Kraig Spahn, Troy Spininger, Don Marfpellar

Outlook: Cochranton could be a team to keep an eye on this fall. The Cardinals lost two solid players in Jeff Hawley and Tim Popp, but they have plenty of players back this season. Hawley was an all-region running back with 1,100 yards and the focus of Cochranton’s offense last season.

Cole Graham

Clayton Beatty

Aside from Hawley and Popp, the Cardinals have plenty of weapons back this season to use. Clayton Beatty was named to the all-region first team as a punter last fall along with second-team wide receiver Cole Graham. Graham had 16 receptions for 224 yards and one touchdown in 2010. Graham’s quarterback, Chad Eisenhooth, returns as well. Eisenhooth completed 51-of-129 passes last season for 651 yards and seven touchdowns.

In the backfield, Cochranton returns its second- and third-leading rushers from last year. Austin Andrews carried the ball 76 times for 499 yards and seven touchdowns, while Clayton Beatty had 331 yards on 57 carries and three TDs. The duo became versatile as Andrews had eight catches for 126 yards and one touchdown, and Beatty had 118 yards on eight catches with one TD.

Austin Andrews

Casey Adams also returns on offense after pulling down nine catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns last season give Eisenhooth plenty of targets this fall.
The Cardinals will be experienced on defense as well. Senior Alex Spahn is back after leading Cochranton with 115 tackles, while Andrews (63 tackles) and Erik Eisenhooth (63) will look to contribute. Andrews and Spahn had two sacks each, while Graham led the team with three. Spahn, Erik Eisenhooth and Graham are all getting collegiate interest and could be game-breakers for the Cardinals.

Cochranton hasn’t been in the mix for a playoff spot in a while, but the Cardinals could thrive in a down region. Cochranton ended 2010 well with three wins over Eisenhower, Youngsville and Lourdes Regional. The Cardinals scored at least 32 points in all three games and are hoping to build on that momentum into this fall.
