Outlook: Greenville will be young this fall after several standout players graduated. First team all-region selections Ryan Kuhn, Mike Simons and Nick Stoyer have graduated. Kuhn was voted to the first team as an offensive and defensive lineman, while Simons was first team as a kicker and punter. Stoyer was one of the top linebackers in District 10 but has moved on to college as well. Stoyer was a first team linebacker and second team tight end, while second teamers Kevin Benson (offensive line), Kyle Semroc (defensive line), Nick Weaver (linebacker) and Mike Black (linebacker) are also gone. Black led the Trojans with 1,083 rushing yards on 143 carries, including 10 touchdowns, while Weaver had 478 yards on 90 carries with seven TDs.

The Trojans won’t be starting over from scratch this fall. Quarterback Tyler Gentile is back after completing 73-of-137 passes for 999 yards and nine touchdowns last fall, while rushing for 223 yards on 47 carries, including one touchdown. He is joined in the backfield by Tyler Fattman, Corey Douglas, Nico Zahniser and Luke Houpt. All four backs rushed for over 100 yards last season and all by Houpt scored a touchdown. They should create a healthy competition in camp for carries, but the main focus of coach Brian Herrick will be to develop the offensive and defensive lines. The lines will play a crucial role this season in opening holes for the running backs and stopping the talented running backs from other Region 3 teams. Braden Gladysz is a returning two-way starter on the line and will look to lead the younger players.

Douglas was Greenville’s second-leading tackler last season with 84 tackles and will look to anchor the defense along with all-region defensive back Randy Perkins. The Trojans’ secondary will have its hands full with the speed and athleticism in Region 3 and could be the biggest key for Greenville. The Trojans have a brutal start to their schedule with talented North East in Week 1 and powerhouse Wilmington the week after. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as Greenville leaves town after the Wilmington game and doesn’t have another home game for six weeks. The only positive for the Trojans regarding their schedule is they will get Region 3 favorites Sharon, Hickory and Wilmington at home this fall.
