Cochranton Cardinals
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Jason Barber (3rd season, 10-25)
2011 overall record: 8-10
2011 region record (place): 3-3 (tied for second)
2011 playoff results: Lost 12-7 to West Middlesex in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Travis Peterson, Mike Brenot
Top returning players: Deven Woodworth, Jordan Rambo, Ryan Northcott, Jesse Staudt, Caleb Peterson, A.J. Nageotte, Jared Barr
Assistant coaches: John Svirbly, Jeff Peterson, Dave Rudy
Outlook: Cochranton will look to keep its program on the upswing this season under coach Jason Barber. After a two-win season in 2010, the Cardinals went 8-10 last spring, including an appearance in the District 10 Class A playoffs. Cochranton will have to replace Travis Peterson and Mike Brenot but the Cardinals have a solid group coming back. Deven Woodworth, Jordan Rambo, Ryan Northcott, Jesse Staudt, Caleb Peterson, A.J. Nageotte and Jared Barr are back, while freshmen Jacob Yarnell and Nathan Kline could be impact players this season. The Cardinals’ situational hitting will be crucial this season with a lack of power in the lineup. Cochranton saw quality competition over the summer in legion play and will look to use that experience to improve. Northcott and Staudt will be some of the Cardinals’ top hitters, while Peterson, Nageotte and Woodworth are speedsters once on base.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Mark McGuire (6th season, 68-26)
2011 overall record: 16-5
2011 region record (place): 12-4 (tied for second)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Union City (12-2), Sharpsville (1-0) and West Middlesex (12-2) to win the District 10 Class A championship. The Cardinals then beat Fort Cherry 4-1 and lost to Clarion 8-0 in the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Sarah Jacobs, Gretchen Herzberger, Kellilyn Dickson, Becca Saunier
Top returning players: Aubrey Herring, Carli Gledhill, Kelli Loper, Hannah Suder, Shelby Proctor
Assistant coaches: Darwin Dupont, Kristin Woge
Outlook: Cochranton will be starting over with the graduation of Sarah Jacobs, Gretchen Herzberger, Kellilyn Dickson and Becca Saunier. All four players were big-time contributors, including Herzberger at the plate and Jacobs on the mound. With the entire battery needing to be replaced, coach McGuire will look toward sophomore Natalie Brock to take over at pitcher. The Cardinals have a solid group of freshmen this season and a steady mix of veterans. Aubrey Herring, Carli Gledhill, Kelli Loper, Hannah Suder and Shelby Proctor are back to help along the younger players. The Cardinals will need to come together quickly in order to defend their District 10 Class A championship. Cochranton is in a tough region where there isn’t much room for error. Saegertown finished 11-5 in region play last spring and did not make the playoffs. With county rivals, including perennial contender Union City, the Cardinals could play meaningful softball each time they take the field for a region game.
