Iroquois Braves
Baseball
Coach (season): Nick Cocolin (1st season)
2011 overall record: 5-7
2011 region record (place): 2-4 (third)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Dave Marnella, Alex Tombaugh, Thomas Wheeler
Top returning players: James Quinn, Colton Edinger, John Finke, Justyn Roda, Joey Lobenthal, Josh Stanford, Michael Yokoff, Noah Wodarski
Assistant coaches: Chip Gorzynski, Josh Frischolz
Outlook: Iroquois will have a new direction this season with first-year coach Nick Cocolin. The Braves have a young team with only one returning senior and three returning juniors. Iroquois might have to rely on freshmen and sophomores to fill in important roles. Iroquois lost Dave Marnella, Alex Tombaugh and Thomas Wheeler to graduation. Senior James Quinn, a first-team all-region outfielder, will likely be the Braves’ leader followed by juniors Colton Edinger, a second-team first baseman, John Finke and Justyn Roda. Joey Lobenthal, Josh Stanford, Michael Yokoff and Noah Wodarski are returning underclassmen that could make an impact, while Alex Burgos, Jeff Kern, Darren Julius, Dylan Carpin, Ryan Edinbger and Ryan Major will look to transition to the varsity level. With a tough region that features Mercyhurst Prep, there are plenty of question marks for the Braves. Iroquois’ success this season could come down to how quickly the underclassmen develop and the Braves come together as a team.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Julie Parker (11th season, 152-66)
2011 overall record: 13-7
2011 region record (place): 13-5 (third)
2011 playoff results: Lost to Titusville 3-0 in the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Becca Cooper
Top returning players: Meghan Martin, Hannah Tombaugh, Annie Hatton, Jenny Johnson
Assistant coaches: Rob Chase, Dennis McLaughlin, Anne Pettitnato, Mickey Allen, Brian Martin, Danielle Chase
Outlook: Iroquois has been going through some years of inexperience lately but that should all change this spring. The Braves lost first-team all-region selection Becca Cooper to graduation, but everyone else is back. Meghan Martin, Hannah Tombaugh, Annie Hatton and Jenny Johnson are returning second-team all-region selections for 11th-year coach Julie Parker. The Braves could also receive contributions from new players Kory Boyd and Sarah Lindvay. Iroquois is in one of the toughest overall regions in District 10 and will be challenged all season. The Braves could develop into a strong contender by the end of the season if they use their experience to develop team chemistry.
