Mercyhurst Prep Lakers
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Randy Durkoske (11th season, 150-57)
2011 overall record: 17-4
2011 region record (place): 6-0 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Youngsville 6-0 and Conneaut Lake 7-0 to win the District 10 Class A championship. Mercyhurst Prep then defeated Coudersport 3-2, Bishop McCort 3-1 and lost to Serra Catholic 11-4 in the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Matt Tobin, Phil Cacchione, Evan Herdzik, Kyle Mohr, Jordan Jaskiewicz, Dan Pollock
Top returning players: Mitch Upperman, Emmitt Lehman, Brandon Peebles, Derrick Post, Ken Fugagli, Austin Bossolt, Aaron Haas
Assistant coaches: Frank Rodriguez, R.J. Niedzwiecki
Outlook: Mercyhurst Prep could be an interesting team this season. The Lakers were hit hard by graduation from a team that was one step from playing for the state championship. Matt Tobin, Phil Cacchione, Evan Herdzik, Kyle Mohr, Jordan Jaskiewicz and Dan Pollock are gone, leaving some huge holes to fill. Mercyhurst has four players back that saw significant playing time last season and will be looked at as leaders this spring. Mitch Upperman is a returning all-region first baseman, while Emmitt Lehman was voted to the first team as an outfielder. Brandon Peebles and Derrick Post also were big-time contributors last season while reserves Austin Bossolt, Ken Fugagli and Aaron Haas are also back. Mercyhurst is the two-time defending D-10 Class A champion and will look to make one final run before moving up to Class AA next spring. The Lakers don’t have any seniors but they will rely on their usual steady defense and clutching hitting. Upperman and Post will see time on the mound along with Sam Corritore and Ian Pertz. Mercyhurst may need a big contribution from the underclassmen this season. Some of the new players to the team include Perz, Corritore and Austin Dudley along with Geoff Shreve, Christ Marton, Erik Niedzwiecki, Ben Forcier, Kyle O’Connell, Josh Irwin, Joe Turano and Chris Vallimont.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Chris Santabene (2nd season, 10-11)
2011 overall record: 10-11
2011 region record (place): 8-8 (sixth)
2011 playoff results: Lost to McDowell 8-0 in the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Kelly Hedderick, Katie Flatley, Julia Bensur, Mariah Spagel
Top returning players: Carly Bitters, Libby Clark, Mary Grace Fitzmaurice, Chelsea Czerwinski, Jenna Skarupski, Alba Espejo, Sirena Plott, Kaitlin Wojnarowski
Assistant coaches: Damian Santabene, Jim Ritzel
Outlook: Mercyhurst Prep will have more experience under coach Chris Santabene this season. The second-year coach led the Lakers to a 10-11 season and an appearance in the District 10 Class AAAA playoffs. Mercyhurst has some holes to fill as Kelly Hedderick, Katie Flatley, Julia Bensur and Mariah Spagel graduated but the Lakers have plenty of experience back. Carly Bitters, Libby Clark, Mary Grace Fitzmaurice, Chelsea Czerwinski, Jenna Skarupski, Alba Espejo, Sirena Plott and Kaitlin Wojnarowski return, while Natalie Rutkowski, Emily Curtis, Ashley Cosme, Olivia Zamiroski, Sarah Barbale, Jennifer Cho and Jenny Lee could be impact players on the varsity level. With a brutal region schedule and some leadership to replace, the early part of the season could be crucial for the Lakers.
