Winter Warm-up – Slippery Rock

   March 30, 2012 12:57 pm

Slippery Rock Rockets
Baseball
Coach (season): Nathan McCollough (1st season)
2011 overall record: 3-9-1
2011 region record (place): 3-6 (tied for fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualifiy for the District 10 playoffs.
Top player lost: Tyler Little
Top returning players: Andrew Gieraltowski, Connor Hogue, Sean White, Cody Stephenson, Mitch Robinson
Assistant coach: Darren Schulz
Outlook: Slippery Rock will be under new direction this season with first-year coach Nathan McCollough. The Rockets lost Tyler Little to graduation but have plenty of players back. Andrew Gieraltowski, Connor Hogue, Sean White, Cody Stephenson and Mitch Robinson return to lead Slippery Rock, which will look to improve and make a run at a playoff spot. Freshmen Travis Lauster and Jake Arienzo could be impact players in their first year along with junior Kyle Bell. The Rockets have struggled recently in a region loaded with District 10 Class AAA contenders. Slippery Rock will need to develop the program a bit under McCollough and winning games may not be as important as building chemistry this season.

Softball
Coach (season): Elma Anschutz (1st season)
2011 overall record: 2-14
2011 region record (place): 2-8 (sixth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top player lost: Melea Mauthe
Top returning players: Stephanie Kotomski, Kalene Ireland, Katie Myers
Assistant coaches: Emily Ballew, Lauren Kosinski
Outlook: The softball program will also be under new direction as Elma Anschutz takes over as head coach. Anschutz is expecting a more aggressive program will help the Rockets improve on its two-win season last spring. Slippery Rock graduated all-region outfielder Melea Mauthe, but the Rockets have several talented players back. Second-team pitcher Stephanie Kotomski put in the work in the offseason to add a few new pitches, while battery mate and fellow second-team selection Kalene Ireland is back as well. Katie Myers is back for the Rockets, while Marie Bosch and Morgan Longdon could make an impact on the varsity level this spring. Region 5 is up in the air this season and hard-working teams like Slippery Rock could be wildcards as the spring progresses.
