Union City Bears
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Frank Cutshall (9th season, 80-65)
2011 overall record: 11-6
2011 region record (place): 4-4 (tied for second)
2011 playoff results: Lost 12-4 to Hickory in the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Jack Kirik, Gavin Nirmaier, Kyle Jones
Top returning players: Colton Yost, Austin Waters, Kyle Hetrick
Assistant coaches: Keith Knauff, Cody Campbell
Outlook: Union City has high hopes this season after returning most of its team from last season. The Bears will have to replace first-team all-region first baseman Jack Kirik along with Gavin Nirmaier and Kyle Jones. Union City has two left-handed pitchers back in Colton Yost and Austin Waters. Yost was a second-team selection at pitcher last year, while Waters was a first-team outfielder. Senior Kyle Hetrick, a first-team outfielder, is back as well. The Bears have a few promising underclassmen that could see some innings to complement the veteran group. Union City’s first goal is to get back to the playoffs and to try and make a deeper run this spring.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Jerry Van Zandt (18th season, 237-91)
2011 overall record: 12-6
2011 region record (place): 12-4 (tied for second)
2011 playoff results: Lost to Cochranton 12-2 in the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Megan Kimmy, Rashel Gilson
Top returning players: Katie Kirik, Noel Wienczkowski, Megan Mongera, Caitlynn Miller
Assistant coaches: Mike Schrecengost, Frank Snyder
Outlook: Union City has a nice mix of veterans and promising new players this year. The Bears will replace graduated pitcher Megan Kimmy with Noel Wienczkowski and will need a player to step in for Rashel Gilson. Katie Kirik is one of the top hitters in Crawford County, while Megan Mongera and Caitlynn Miller are back as well. Jenna Chelton, Victoria Miggliaccio and Lauren Miller are up-and-coming players that could make an impact on the varsity level this season. Union City has developed into a perennial playoff team and seems to have the talent to return to the postseason once again. The Bears will need some of the new players to acclimated to varsity right away but have a strong group of leaders to help out.
