Today is the kickoff for Kickoff magazine. The 116-page District 10 football preview will be available at all Country Fair locations throughout northwestern Pennsylvania.

All week, we’ve been giving fans a sneak peek at the magazine on the Varsity blog. Today, we’ll look at The City Game, a Kickoff feature that focuses on Erie’s first 125 years of high school football.

The City Game starts on Pages 58 and 59 in the center spread of Kickoff and offers fans seven pages of historical information that they might not know about Erie football. Because of the amount of information involved, The City Game focuses on highlights. Learn about the 1887 Erie High School team that started it all. Read about the violence in the early 1900s that almost led to the end of Erie football (at least temporarily). The City Game also delves into the emergence of new Erie high schools around the 1920s, the impact of World War II, the superstars of the 1950s and 1960s and the state championship seasons of recent years. There’s much more, including a timeline of highlights from schools, teams and players that made Erie history.

The feature is confined to Erie city football. Adding the Erie County League teams would have been too ambitious of a project to contain in the magazine. (We promise that ECL history will get its day in Kickoff.)

This is the third edition of the award-winning Kickoff produced by the Erie Times-News, and we believe you’ll agree that it’s our best. Pick up a Kickoff today for $5 at all area Country Fair stores.
