Cochranton Cardinals
Boys
Coach: Scott McCurdy (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 18-6
2011-12 region record (place): 8-0 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Kennedy Catholic 50-28 in the District 10 Class A semifinals and lost to VisionQuest 67-44 in the D-10 Class A third-place game.
Top players lost: Josh Oertly, Tyler Kenny, Austin Troutner
Top returning players: Nick Dickson, Garrett Adams, Logan Herzberger, Andy Sounier
Assistant coaches: To be determined
Outlook: Cochranton is in transition mode right now as coach Mel Dainty resigned last week. The Cardinals suffered some big losses to graduation, including Region 3 player of the Year Josh Oertly. He was voted to the all-region first team along with fellow graduate Tyler Kenny. Cochranton does return three starters, including Nick Dickson, Logan Herzberger and Garrett Adams. Dickson was voted to the all-region first team last winter, while Herzberger was on the second team. Both can be leaders this season along with Adams and Andy Sounier. Cochranton has a solid group back but needs to get a head coach in place soon. The Cardinals are in a new region and could be a favorite to collect another region title this winter. Cochranton will need to buy into a new system right away and build some chemistry with younger players to return to the playoffs. The Cardinals had a good summer and fall participation as Cochranton’s program continues to grow.

Girls
Coach (season): Gary Egli (7th season)
2011-12 overall record: 13-8
2011-12 region record (place): 6-6 (fourth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Kelly Loper, Shelby Proctor
Top returning players: Madison Bernading, Kendall Dixon, Morgan Egli, Kayla Quickel, Cassie Offi
Assistant coaches: Christa Egli, Kristen Rynd
Outlook: Cochranton coach Gary Egli is looking for someone to step up this year to lead the Cardinals. Cochranton has plenty of experience back and will be athletic this season. The Cardinals will need to replace big-time leadership in Kelly Loper and Shelby Proctor. Both graduated in the spring and will be tough to replace. The Cardinals return four starters, including junior guards Madison Bernading and Kendall Dixon along with sophomore center Morgan Egli and senior forward Kayla Quickel. Bernading was voted to the all-region second team last year. Senior guard Cassie Offi is another returning player that could be an impact player this winter. The Cardinals won’t need much off the bench but sophomores Abby Clulo and Kassidy Dixon put the work in during the offseason. Junior Riley Kasee has also improved and all three could see the floor this year. The Cardinals could be a contender right away in a region that includes three classes. Conneaut is an obvious contender right away but Cochranton’s experience could keep the Cardinals in the region race for most of the winter.
