Outlook: Commodore Perry has its program headed in the right direction. The Panthers have made the District 10 Class A playoffs the past two years and it was especially impressive last winter after replacing four starters. Coach Bob Messina will face a similar situation this year with the graduation of Cerena Anderson, Victoria Harrison, Jackie Harsh and Jenna Harsh. Harrison and Anderson were voted to the all-region second team last winter after terrific senior seasons. Kate Powell is the only returning starter and will be complemented by fellow senior Lexi Grinnell. Powell and Grinnell are the only seniors on the team and only two other players have varsity experience. The Panthers will be young and inexperienced this winter but Messina is looking for several players to step up. Emily Kitchen led the junior varsity in scoring last year, while fellow juniors Autumn Campbell and Courtney Beachy could also be big contributors. Sophomores Alexis Nagy and Devon Sernik could see varsity action while junior Rayna Foust is returning from a knee injury and could battle for playing time. Commodore Perry lost three of its top four scorers to graduation as well as its top two rebounders and top assist leader. Replacing those roles with younger players will be a challenge in a tough region. Making the playoffs the past two years will help the Panthers’ confidence and a third trip could come down to how quickly a young team builds chemistry and comes together.
