East Warriors
Boys
Coach (season, record): Matt Jones (7th season, 87-59)
2011-12 overall record: 5-16
2011-12 region record (place): 3-11 (seventh)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top player lost: Darion Qualls
Top returning player: Jauwan Ford
Assistant coaches: Mike Jones, J.T. Jones, Tim Mohney
Outlook: East is looking to bounce back this season after winning five games last winter. The Warriors will have to replace all-region selection Darion Qualls, but everyone else is back. Jauwan Ford is a force inside and natural leader for East. He is joined by Sanel Burzic, Kyree Kirkland, Anthony Palau, Trousie Thrower, Anthony Gates and Kyle Quinn. The Warriors have an athletic team that could be especially tough on the defensive end. The problem might be experience on the varsity level. East will have to use its defense and athleticism to put together wins. Coach Matt Jones could reach 100 wins this season as the Warriors try to rebuild in a brutal region.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Leonard Ford (7th season, 55-77)
2011-12 overall record: 2-15
2011-12 region record (place): 2-4 (third)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Diarra Freeman, Brinna Hughes
Top returning players: Tori Hubbart, Cierra Stovall, Jordan Gates, Nateasha Roberts
Assistant coaches: Amy Grande, Mike Anderson
Outlook: East is looking to rebound from a two-win season in which the Warriors missed the playoffs. Diarra Freeman and Brinna Hughes graduated leaving two big holes for coach Leonard Ford. Freeman was voted to the all-region first team while Hughes’ height was a big presence inside. The Warriors return three starters in Cierra Stovall, Tori Hubbart and Jordan Gates. All three are juniors and look to emerge as leaders this season. Junior Nateasha Roberts is back from injury and could work her way into the starting lineup. East’s biggest strength could be its depth. Along with the returning juniors, the Warriors could get big contributions from Kiarra Pullium, Shareha Bender-Mathis, Derisha Fillyaw and Ronneisha Beason. Pullium and Bender-Mathis are transfers from Strong Vincent, who started their careers as East. Fillyaw transferred from Central Tech, while Beason moved back to Erie from North Carolina. The Warriors will also have a solid freshman class to develop this winter. The biggest weakness could be inside with Hughes graduating, but Hubbart’s return from injury should help. The Warriors are looking for more consistency this year and their success could depend on how quickly chemistry is built among the new players.
