Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles
Boys
Coach (season, record): Rick Mancino (4th season, 45-24)
2011-12 overall record: 16-10
2011-12 region record (place): 7-3 (tied for second)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Cochranton 50-28 in the District 10 Class A semifinals before losing to West Middlesex 41-38 in overtime in the D-10 championship. Kennedy then defeated Cornell 64-53 in the first round before losing to Ridgway 73-50 in the second round.
Top player lost: Kenny Fill
Top returning players: Mac Hartman, Jeff Thompkins, Jimmie D’Onofrio, Gerald Zachar, Brennan Wassil
Assistant coaches: Corey Djakovich, Brian Hoover, John Heutsche
Outlook: Kennedy Catholic came within one overtime period of winning another District 10 championship in its storied program history. The Golden Eagles look like an instant favorite to win D-10 this year with the departure of West Middlesex to Class AA and an experienced and talented team returning. Kennedy will have to replace Kenny Fill, the Region 1 Player of the Year and an all-region first-team selection. The Golden Eagles return Mac Hartman, Jeff Thompkins, Jimmie D’Onofrio, Gerald Zachar and Brennan Wassil, who could make up the starting lineup this year. Hartman was Kennedy’s leading scorer and rebounder last year to be voted to the all-region first team. Thompkins, another experienced senior, could step up as a big-time scorer after being voted to the second team. Wassil could be the ‘X’ factor this year at 6-5. He brings size to Kennedy to complement Hartman, who is 6-6. Juniors Sam Crow, Gavin Cianci, Matt Hurton and Jake Feeney are back along with sophomores Aubrey Jennings and Jake Leipheimer. Jennings could compete for a starting spot in camp. Arlene Brewer is a transfer from Farrell that could contribute along with juniors Chris James and Jamie Hook. Coach Rick Mancino commented that this year’s team could be the most athletic team he’s had at Kennedy, which also has size and depth. The Golden Eagles’ only problem could be coming together as a team and building chemistry. Kennedy loaded its schedule up with talented teams, including West Middlesex, Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Ohio powers Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney. If nothing else, the Golden Eagles will be battle-tested by the time the D-10 playoffs roll around. The D-10 playoffs may only be a formality for the loaded Golden Eagles, who could aspire to a trip to Hershey.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Tom Burns (6th season, 90-35)
2011-12 overall record: 22-4
2011-12 region record (place): 10-0 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Linesville 79-48 and Conneaut Valley 56-21 to win the District 10 Class A championship. Kennedy then defeated Riverview 59-30 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs and Clarion 59-43 in the second round. Kennedy lost to Vincentian Academy 56-51 in the quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Marina Wareham, Angelene Rapone
Top returning players: Rachel Burns, Alex Ricketts, Courtney Sargent, Rebekah Kish, Taylor Hood
Assistant coaches: Sarah Hurl, Tiffany Kress
Outlook: Kennedy Catholic rolled to the District 10 Class A championship last year and the Golden Eagles looked primed for another title. Kennedy has to replace 1,000-point scorer Marina Wareham and Angelene Rapone. Wareham was voted to the all-region first team last winter and the Region 1 Player of the Year. The two leave big holes this year for coach Tom Burns to fill in. Kennedy does have a strong, experienced group back. Rachel Burns, Alex Ricketts, Courtney Sargent, Rebekah Kish and Taylor Hood are back and could fill out the starting lineup, while sophomore transfer Tatum Kress could contributed right away. Ricketts, an Akron recruit, was voted to the all-region first team last year along with Rachel Burns, who is coming off a knee injury sustained in the playoffs. Those two along with Kish and Hood will handle guard duties, while Sargent will start at center. Rachel Burns and Ricketts will both go over 1,000 career points this winter. Kennedy has plenty of experience but Tom Burns is quick to point out how tall his team is. The starting lineup measures at 6-3, 6-1, 5-11, 5-10 and 5-7. The Golden Eagles could also receive big efforts from 5-8 freshman Reagan O’Brien and 6-3 freshman April Bocian. Kennedy looks like a very strong favorite in D-10 with aspirations for a deep PIAA playoff run as well.
