Lakeview Sailors
Boys
Coach (season, record): Gary Burke (13th season, 182-112)
2011-12 overall record: 19-7
2011-12 region record (place): 9-1 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Fairview 33-30 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals before losing to North East 41-40 in the semifinals. Lakeview the defeated Saegertown 73-57 in the third-place game. The Sailors lost to Beaver Falls 69-37 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top player lost: Derek Giovengo
Top returning players: Dalton Boggs, Coty Gander, Casey Greggs
Assistant coaches: Larry Boggs, Kevin Persch, Dale Walker, Jay Carlson, Bill Beith, Steve Aden, Bobby Urey
Outlook: Lakeview had its heart broken in the D-10 semifinals last year after a few final-minute free throws ended its run at a D-10 championship. The Sailors rebounded to make the PIAA playoffs and are back for more this year. Lakeview returns an experienced group that is only missing graduate Derek Giovengo, who averaged 5.6 points per game last year to be voted to the all-region second team. Seniors Casey Greggs and Dalton Boggs were voted to the all-region first team as juniors, while Coty Gander was voted to the second team. Greggs was also named the Region 2 Player of the Year. Boggs averaged 12.4 ppg last year, while Greggs scored 14.9 ppg and Gander has 11.5 ppg. Zach Van Dusen and Brandon Rice could fill out the starting lineup. Van Dusen brings experience from last year while Rice, a 6-2 junior, is a big and strong post player that could add to the team right away. The Sailors used a 6-man rotation last winter but could expand to a 9-man rotation this year. Lakeview won’t have to go too far to see where it stands in D-10. West Middlesex bumped up from Class A and is an instant favorite to win the D-10 title. The Sailors will get two shots at the Big Reds in region play but don’t be surprised if the two teams meet up for the D-10 championship in late February.

Girls
Coach (season): Jodi Seddon (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 2-20
2011-12 region record (place): 0-12 (seventh)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Brynn King, Kylie Custer, Cassie Legal
Top returning players: Casey Stringer, Chelsea Davis, Steph Adams, Sami Scott, Alex Ruedigar, Rachel McKean, Samantha Riddle, Mariah Kasbee, Marla Holland
Assistant coaches: Tammy Rose, Marie Kohr, Cindy Troy
Outlook: Lakeview is starting over with a new coach and a new system. Jodi Seddon, a former player at Lakeview, Gannon and Thiel, brings a fresh approach with a new system. The Sailors won only two games last year and has to find a way to string together games this year. Lakeview graduated Brynn King, Kylie Custer and Cassie Legal with five returning seniors. The five include Casey Stringer, Chelsea Davis, Steph Adams, Sami Scott and Alex Ruedigar – all guards – along with four juniors in Rachel McKean, Samantha Riddle, Mariah Kasbee and Marla Holland. The nine upperclassmen will need to build chemistry and figure out a solid rotation for the Sailors to become competitive. The height and size Lakeview needs could come from the sophomore class, while several freshman could complete for playing time as well. It may take a few weeks for the Sailors to develop some chemistry but if they buy into Seddon’s system, Lakeview could be an interesting team this winter.
