Lakeview Sailors
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Bill Beith (15th season, 129-124-1)
2012 overall record: 5-14
2012 region record (place): 2-6 (fourth)
2012 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top player lost: Derek Giovengo
Top returning players: Austin Slater, Shane Whitehouse, Andrew Parimuha, Zack Bigley, Logan Snyder
Assistant coaches: Derek Sumner, Troy Snyder, Josh Friters
Outlook: Lakeview’s status went through some changes in the offseason as the Sailors moved down to Class A and changed regions to Region 1. Lakeview could become a contender right away with an experienced team back. The Sailors graduated second-team all-region pitcher Derek Giovengo but have everyone else back. Andrew Parimuha is a returning first-team desginated hitter and Zack Bigley returns after being voted to the first team at utility as a sophomore. Logan Snyder had a breakout freshman season to be voted to the all-region second team at catcher and Shane Whitehouse is a second-team second baseman. Austin Slater returns after an all-region junior season at third base. All five are projected to start and be big contributors this season, while Lakeview could also start Jake Elder, Jake Heim, Keith Kepner and Shane Ryder in the outfield in different capacities. Bigley, Snyder, Slater, Elder, Whitehouse and Brandon Persch could all see innings on the mound to help replace Giovengo. The Sailors have leadership, experience and won’t have to worry about some of the Crawford County powers this season in region play. As long as Lakeview continues to build chemistry and develop its pitching staff, the Sailors could be making a serious run at the District 10 Class A championship.

Softball
Coach (season): Chad Proper (7th season)
2012 overall record: 2-18
2012 region record (place): 1-15 (ninth)
2012 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Chastity McCloskey, Brittany Smith
Top returning players: Katie Watts, Kala Mahen, Salena Stutzman, Natalie Grant
Assistant coaches: Rob Lewis, Kevin Watts
Outlook: Lakeview will change regions this season as the Sailors leave the Crawford County region and head south to Region 2. The Sailors lost two standout players to graduation in Chastity McCloskey and Brittany Smith. McCloskey handled the pitching staff behind the plate and Smith was the starting shortstop. Salena Stutzman will step in at shortstop and Natalie Grant at catcher. They will be counted on to contribute this season along with pitchers Katie Watts and Kala Mahen. Watts and Mahen will likely find a place on the field when the other is pitching. Lakeview could also receive help from new players Katie McClelland and Madison Barish. Coach Chad Proper is looking for his two pitchers to stay healthy this season, which could keep the Sailors in the mix for the Region 2 title or a playoff spot. Lakeview has experience but the Sailors will need to keep developing to climb out of the bottom of the region standings and make a push for a postseason spot.
