2012 playoff results: Lost to State College 35-13 in a PIAA Class AAAA subregional.

Outlook: DuBois continued to improve under coach Frank Varischetti last season but didn’t fare well in the playoffs. The Beavers have a strong group of linemen back and a rising collegiate prospect in quarterback Gabe French. DuBois will need to fill in some holes, including plenty of offensive production out of the backfield. Garrett Brown graduated after rushing for 1,751 yards and 23 touchdowns last fall, and Ben Mayro, another graduate, was second with 223 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Brown was voted to the all-region first team and the Region 5 Player of the Year as a senior. The Beavers also lost Garrett Miles, Nick Davido, Landon Hanna, Shane Marshall, Nick Bontempo, Jared Baummer and Jake Peterson to graduation. Davido was a first-team offensive and defensive lineman, while Hanna was voted to the first team at punter. Marshall was a first-team linebacker, and Peterson was a first-team defensive back. Miles was voted to the second team at wide receiver after hauling in 33 catches for 360 yards and three touchdowns. Baummer was third in receiving with 26 catches for 399 yards and three touchdowns, and Brown was fourth with 18 catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns to leave more holes in production. Bontempo was voted to the all-region second team at linebacker to complete a talented class lost to graduation for DuBois.

The Beavers have a strong group of experienced players to lead the way this year, including Bryson Paulinellie, Gabe French, Tyler Fleeger, Matt Lingle, Nick Johnson, Josh Hnat, Cory Berquist, Trevor Schwiderske and T.J. Troup. French was voted to the second team as a sophomore quarterback after throwing for 1,540 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is back to lead a team that is looking for a running back or two to step up. One candidate could be Paulinellie, who spent time in the backfield and was a main receiver last year. Paulinellie, who was voted to the all-region second team at wide receiver, caught 29 passes for 445 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 137 yards. Fleeger is a returning first-team lineman on offense and defense to anchor the line, while Josh Hnat is back at kicker after making the all-region first team his junior season. Lingle and Johnson are returning second-team offensive lineman, and Berquist is a returning second-team linebacker. Derek Hillebrand could step up as a wide receiver after hauling in seven catches for 72 yards as a junior, and Chandler Davis had six catches for 59 yards. The Beavers have an experienced line but they need several skill position players to step up. Having a solid quarterback back this season is important for DuBois, especially with a challenging schedule. DuBois picked up an interesting game in West Virginia and opens the season at home against possible PIAA playoff opponent Mifflin County. If the Beavers can develop a backfield and more targets for French, they could be a contender in Region 5 and a tough out in the PIAA postseason.
